Tarantula Info: This iconic species is the "poster child" of the tarantula hobby. Its scientific name was recently changed, but there will never be a more popular tarantula than what we still like to call "Brachypelma smithi". This is the spider you have seen in movies and advertisements, or anywhere else that its familiar and incomparably beautiful gold, brown, orange and black color and pattern is needed to dazzle. It has long been a protected species, but captive bred spiders are well-established and every tarantula keeper will usually have at least one in his or her collection, some that are a couple decades old.
