Of the three species of Goliath Tarantulas, the Goliath Pink-foot is the most slender and long-legged and set sthe record for tarantula legspan. Its common name comes from the fact that spiderlings and juveniles have pinkish “feet” (tarsi) on all of their legs. Young specimens of its cousin Theraphosa stirmi have pink tarsi on just the forelegs and Theraphosa blondi young do not have pink “feet” at all. Another thing that differentiates the Goliath Pink-foot from the other two Goliath tarantulas is that mature males have mating spurs (aka tibial apophyses) on their forelegs, whereas the others do not. That’s why its scientific name is T. apophysis. Care for all three Goliaths is the same. These are tarantulas that need ventilation, but they also need elevated humidity and moisture to thrive. They are giants of the tropical forests that create deep burrows in the damp earth or use cover or abandoned burrows of other animals as retreats. They are fabulous display spiders of unrivaled size.
