Found in the dry forests of Yucatán, the northernly peninsula of southeastern Mexico, this spider is somewhat similar in appearance to the closely related Tliltocatl vagans, albeit usually more brownish and with less fiery abdominal hairs. The legs and carapace are typically brown, while the abdomen is blackish with rusty-red hairs. Until recently known as Brachypelma epicureanum, the CITES-protected genus Brachypelma is now reserved for Mexico’s Pacific Coast “red-legged” tarantulas.
